A Confederate soldier decides he has had enough of the war, and after killing another soldier who was raping a young slave girl, he deserts and heads north to the free states. Fate brings him into partnership with a runaway slave who has killed his abusive master. The slave, Titus, is also trying to escape to the free north states. An unlikely, but necessary friendship is forged during the most turbulent time in American history.
