The Golden Years

Now that I’m old I can look back When my memory will allow To early years and childhood fears I still remember now Like when I learned to ride a bike Without my training wheels A crash or two, all black and blue I recall just how that feels Then yesterday it came to mind My walker let me down After a beer it’s hard to steer And it’s safer on the ground Then later, when I had a look My arm was bruised again It may be from the fall I took Or it might have been the wind My mother said when I was young I potty trained with ease Nowadays it’s fair to say It’s a crap-shoot when I sneeze My father struggled with us kids When time to go to bed We cried and whined and took our time Ignoring what he said Finally, he’d yell at us NOT ANOTHER SOUND Today you’ll find me fast sleep Before the sun goes down My high school days were filled with fun Full of friends and life I never bragged with the grades I had But there I found a wife My folks and family made it clear The timing wasn’t right When hers agreed we didn’t plead We ran away that night Las Vegas seemed the perfect place To start our married life You don’t think twice, just roll the dice And win a loving wife We also won on slot machines Almost two million bucks Somehow our families changed their tunes And now they wished us luck The days and months turned into years Our love has only grown She and I refused to die So they put us in a home Here we live a quiet life With dinner served at three She’s the queen of shuffleboard While I can barely pee Now that I’m old I can look back When my memory will allow The years have gone, I’ve lived so long But I don’t remember now
